Custom fields and record types
When a field is enough, and when you need a whole record type.

Custom fields
Settings → Fields. A field belongs to contacts, companies, deals or a record type, in one of twelve types, with a bilingual label. A deal field can apply to every module or to one. Two modules may use the same key for different things.
The field appears on forms, in views, in import and in export — not only on the edit page.
Record types
A "Contract number" on a contact is a field. A property an estate agency manages, or a machine an installer services, is not a contact, a company or a deal — that is a record type. Create it under Settings → Record types and it gets its own menu item.
It has the same shape as the built-in entities: an owner, links to a contact, company and deal, and the same record scope, search, export, audit log and webhook events. Removing one deactivates it rather than deleting it: the records stay.
A record type's fields belong to that type only — two types can each have their own "price".
